(Series; CBS, Thurs. Feb. 19, 8:31 p.yards.)

Which have “Two and a half Dudes” finalizing off, CBS will endeavour to help you complete brand new gap from the shrinking the fresh new algorithm to help you a few undoubtedly extremely common guys, titled Felix and you may Oscar. Matthew Perry finishes their potentially questionable article-“Friends” hat key – which have appeared in comedies for NBC and you will ABC too – using this reboot of “New Unusual Few,” a cherished show one still comes certain stop away from Neil Simon’s strategy, and in addition seems specifically dated contained in this point in time, just what having Felix while the nonsexual companion, essentially, to Oscar’s slovenly husband. A casting brings specific hope, but it nonetheless feels oh-so-twentieth century.

Not all contours from Simon’s new allow it to be towards the pilot, but they promote a religious relationship to the main cause. As well, Garry Marshall, just who adapted the brand new inform you to help you Television, serves as a representative, which have Bob Every day, a keen alum regarding “Frasier” and you will “Desperate Housewives,” due to the fact showrunner.

Thomas Lennon, meanwhile, aims somewhat vainly to differentiate himself regarding Tony Randall’s deal with Felix, whose allergic attacks and you may quirks – off preparing in order to an addiction to neatness – clash which have Perry’s disheveled masculinity since the Oscar, elevated out of sportswriter into the role from sporting events talkradio servers once the, as we know, printing is actually for saps and you can losers. Absurdly, Oscar features his very own clips wall structure to keep track of video game, and therefore need to put your someplace in Rush Limbaugh’s tax class.

Once more, the action will get going with Felix being booted by his partner, temporarily taking up home for the divorced Oscar, that is busily making an application for busy that have a good comely neighbors (Leslie Bibb, when you look at the a merely continual part). That give a way of opening said the next door neighbor’s neurotic aunt, Emily, starred from the Lindsay Sloane, just who signifies a Lourdes wives mail order bride kind-regarding women form of Felix, providing your someone having which to help you bond. So that the a couple of women can be siblings, simply not of your Cuckoo Pigeon variety.

Typically “The fresh Weird Few” could have been an extraordinarily strong layout on-stage and screen, if rewritten for ladies or simply just conned. However, this nevertheless feels, eventually, one another conceptually defective and you may an examination off just how much goodwill Perry – exactly who offers creating credit on prime with Danny Jacobson and you can Joe Keenan – keeps left given that Chandler Yahoo recedes further towards rear-consider mirror.

In one of the couples progressive flourishes, when you’re getting gay wasn’t area of the talk from the 1968 movie, it’s handled overtly right here, from Emily’s partner with left her to possess a person so you can Oscar claiming on the Felix, “He seems very gay, however, he isn’t.” Not that there can be one thing incorrect with that.

The product quality support participants have Wendell Pierce (seemingly reused out-of his role for the “The fresh Michael J. Fox Inform you”) and you will visitor Dave Foley as the Oscar’s poker buddies, as there are one really make fun of-out-loud eyes gag during the opener’s very prevent, though one most likely happens far too late so you can spraying enough sky freshener over so it restoration resulting in Felix to help you honk and you can wheeze.

Television Opinion: ‘The brand new Weird Couple’

To have CBS, “Men’s” get-off hastens the feeling out of necessity in order to replace their funny repertoire, that has constantly looked – ratings-smart, and some extent, qualitatively – including “The top Shag Idea” in the middle of dwarf celebrities. The fresh new circle comes with considering the inform you throughout the as the felicitous an effective release program as it can certainly offer getting sampling purposes, sandwiched between CBS’ megahit and you can “Men’s” one-time finale.

Perhaps “The fresh new Unusual Couples” begins you to definitely reloading procedure. However, provided how exhausted the fresh inform you feels currently, if your cumulative reaction in the more youthful listeners brand new community covets was finalized “FU,” for a change, that actually will most likely not suggest Felix Unger.
